Witnessing animal cruelty during vacation is distressing – but, keep in mind that tourists can be powerful agents of change for the countless animals that suffer worldwide.

Here are some guidelines for what to do if you encounter animal cruelty or abuse while traveling.

RECORD the details:

  • Record the time, date and location of the incident
  • Note how many and what type of animals were involved
  • If possible, take photos or video as evidence

REPORT the incident to:

  • Local police or law enforcement authorities

  • A local WSPA office
  • In cases of marine mammal harassment in the U.S., call the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Law Enforcement 24-hour toll-free hotline (800) 853-1964      

VOICE your concerns to:

  • Those inflicting the cruelty and politely request them to stop the abuse
  • Your travel agent, tour operator and hotel manager
  • The local tourism office
  • The country's ambassador, consular or diplomatic representative in your country of residence. Find contact information >>
